Hotheads Stylist: Samantha Kane

In 8th grade! I remember ripping out make up and hair ads from magazines and compiling them in a three-ring binder to use as a reference when doing my friends hair and makeup.

HH: What your favorite Hotheads Hair Extension color?
SK: I love the 613 and 25 because I can make custom pastel colors so easily on them.

HH: Is there anyone that you would like to work with whom you haven't yet?
SK: I would love to work with Oribe and learn all of his styling tips. He does big, beautiful hair better than anyone.

HH: Do you think this is a skill that successful beauty professionals are born with or is it one that can to be cultivated and perfected?
SK: I think you have to have a knack for it. I believe those with an artistic vision who are passionate about hair and really creating something beautiful will excel in the beauty industry. Passion and hard work is what will separate you from the rest.

HH: How can young men and women who are aspiring to work in the beauty industry begin their journey?
SK: Get involved any way you can! Read magazines, find fashion blogs, go to art museums....study all sides of the beauty industry. It doesn't matter if its runway couture styles or TV commercials knowing all angles and absorbing it all is the first step.

HH: What are some career goals that people should set for themselves before attempting a career in beauty?
SK: Be ready to assist and work under someone. Coming out of hair school I knew I had SO MUCH to learn still. You have to be okay with not knowing everything right away. Find a salon that suits your style with people who inspire you and let them teach you what they know. If you can't handle assisting...you won't be able to handle the wild world of the beauty industry.

HH: What is the hardest part about working in beauty?
SK: I think the hardest part is trying to become better than you are.

HH: Is beauty school a necessary step to take toward a career?

SK:  I think beauty school is very important if you want to be HANDS-ON in the beauty industry. There's so many ways to be involved but if you want to create beauty with your own hands i think beauty school is a must!

HH: Who has inspired you the most throughout your career in beauty?
SK: The people I work with inspire me a lot. I learn so much from them and they're all so talented that it pushes me harder to be better then i am.

HH: How can girls highlight their best features without going overboard?
SK: I think eyebrows are most important! They frame your whole face. With a heavier brow being trendy lately ...its easy for girls to go overboard when penciling them in. Be careful ladies.

HH: Why do you think you decided to become a hair stylist?
SK: Ever since I was a kid I would try to cut my Barbie's hair into new styles or change the color of my own hair with whatever I could get my hands on I.E. Sharpies, Hi-Lighters, food coloring, Sun-In Cool-Aid  etc. I've always been attracted to changing someone appearance.

HH: What inspires you? Who inspires you?
SK: Runway and avant garde hair styles, vintage fashion and hairstyles, tattoos, music,

HH: What are your favorite Hotheads hair products?
SK: The extensions themselves I think that goes without saying. And the brushes are awesome too!

HH: Which styling tools do you use most often?
SK: FHI blowdryer, Hot Tools curling iron, GHD flat iron

HH: What are some good tips for young people trying to break into the industry?
SK: Don't try to compete with everyone/everything you see. You'll get overwhelmed and lose yourself.

HH: How do you feel hair relates to personal style?
SK: I have always said that hair is your #1 accessory. You can wear jeans and a t-shirt everyday and if you change your hair you'll feel totally different.

HH:How do you think that hair relates to a person's confidence?

SK: Hair plays a huge importance in someones confidence. Hair can change a persons entire look, for the better or for the worst,  so it's important for us as stylists to make the client look and feel better than they did before they sat down. We have to take care of them. They put a lot of trust in our hands (literally) to create something special for them. Clients look to us as experts and it's our job to make look and feel the best!
