Holiday Braided Chignon

Holiday Braided Chignon with Kelly Saks

Instant length and volume is one of the greatest services you can provide your guests. With the use of Hotheads Extensions, you can create volume in as little as one pack (depending on the density of their hair). Many guests are looking to add length to achieve star quality hair styles, voluminous up-do's and pinterest-worthy braids.

All you need to create this look:
Hotheads Extensions
(1 Pack ) No. 6 in lengths 18” - 20”
(2 packs) No. 8 in lengths 18” - 20”
Bobby Pins
Claw Clips
Sectioning Comb
Hair Bands or Ties
Shears

1.Once you apply Hotheads extensions, begin by curling the hair to create extra texture. A deconstructed braid looks effortless and chic! If you are trying to achieve a sleek, finished look, skip the curling iron and opt for a high-quality flat iron.

2. Consider the neckline and jewelry that will be worn, to select the side that the chignon will rest on.  Now the hair is ready to be braided. Begin by separating the hair into 2 vertical parts.  Pull a thin strand of hair from the outside of the left section. Pull it over to the inside of the right section.  if you want a tight braid, take even strands from each side. If you want a more messy look, take uneven strands.

3. Repeat step 2, alternating sides until you reach the end of the braid. Fasten with a hair tie.

4. Once you have achieved your desired braid, start at the top and gently tug pieces of the braid to give it a tousled look. For a sleek finish skip deconstructing the braid. Voila! A perfect daytime look.

5. For a modern chignon, grab the end of the braid and knot it around the top (as you would a bun). Fasten with bobby pins that match your guest’s hair color.

6. Mist with your favorite finishing spray and they're set to party! For these and more tutorials, stay tuned to the Hotheads Pinterest.

Offices will be closed December 25 & 26, 2014 + January 1 & 2, 2015

Sombre Tutorial with Kelly Saks

Hotheads Extensions are well-known for creating length and volume, but one of the greatest services you can provide to your salon guest is chemical-free color. Hotheads Extensions are available in 42 natural shades, including 6 gorgeous Ombré colors!

With options like these, it’s easy to custom create a trendy color melt to match your guest’s changing needs.
Hotheads Stylist Aurezu custom creates a Sombré (or subtle Ombré) for Fashion Blogger client Kelly Saks (@kellysaks) using Colors No. 6, 7 & 8. This blend of toffee, honey & ash blonde is PERFECT for a Fall Ombré.

       The Tools:
            • Hotheads Extensions:
                1 Pack No. 6 in 18”-20”
                1 Pack No. 7 in 18”-20”
                1 Pack No. 8 in 18”-20”
            • Bobby Pins
            • Claw Clips
            • Comb
            • Hair Ties
            • Shears
            • Styling Rattail Brush

The Application:
Begin the application by following the Hotheads Sectioning Method. We recommend flat ironing your guests hair to create precise sections.

To achieve this Sombré effect, select the lightest color extension you are working with (for our model it was color no. 8). This color should be coupled together for the first row.

Move to the 2nd row. Using the brick-lay method, place the lightest color extension on the bottom, and top it off with the darkest color extension you are working with. For example, we used color 8 on the bottom and 6 on top.

At the third row switch the top color extension to your mid tone, we placed color 7 on top of color 8 to soften the contrast. Continue this color combination until you reach the row above the ears ( this is typically the 4th or 5th row)

For the row above the ears, couple the lightest color together to brighten up the face. We used 8 on top and bottom for this row.

For the final row use your midtone placed on top of the lightest color. We use color 7 on top of color 8. Keep in mind, this is a custom color service for our guest Kelly Saks.

Use this tutorial as a reference, but select colors based upon your clients natural hair and their desired look.

Haunted Hollywood Starlet Hair Tutorial with Lea Cakes

As we know, many of you last minute lovelies will be scrambling this week for a Halloween costume. The one thing you won’t have to scramble for is hair to pair with it. Lea Cakes and Hotheads have you covered!

TOOLS:
Lea Cakes is wearing a full head of Hotheads Extension using color numbers No. 5, No. 7, No. 27, and No. 55 in  lengths of 22” - 24”.

- Hair clips or bobby pins
- Paddle Brush
- Flexible hold hairspray
- 1 1/4” Extra long barrel digital curling iron

STEPS:
Step 1:  After washing and blow drying your hair, brush your hair out nice and smooth using your favorite paddle or extension brush.

Step 2: Separate into small sections using a hair clip.

Step 3: Using one section at a time, start with a 1 1/4” extra long barrel curling iron and curl hair to the base. Any time you set hair using a hot tool, it’s highly recommended that you use a thermal protectant.

Step 4: Once you feel the hair is properly heated, remove the curling iron and immediately set it with a clip.  Place your hand at the edge of the barrel and drop the curl right into your hand keeping the curl intact.

Step 5: Roll the curl right back on base and pin to place. Continue around the head pinning all curls up. Spray the curls with a flexible hairspray to allow them to set.

Step 6:  Once your hair has had enough time to cool, begin removing the pins. It will be VERY curly when it comes down.

Step 7:  Take your paddle brush and brush through all of those curls, brushing out the curls will give you the gorgeous, Hollywood glam effect.

Step 8:  The more you brush, the shinier and smoother the hair will look. Go for it! Keep brushing until you get a nice soft wave.

Step 9: Lea is wearing Hotheads Extensions in Lengths of 22” - 24”, which give her the body and flexibility to complete this hauntingly beautiful look.

Step 10: Bring you hair to one side to give you that plunging, sexy look spray it with flexible hold spray in place.

Voíla!  You've achieved your Hollywood Startlet style!

THE SHAIRING INITIATIVE

For Immediate Release
Hotheads Hair Extensions is proud to announce Hair With A Voice’s SHAIRING Initiative, a progressive hair donation program that offers charitable contributions through the proceeds from the sales of hair. This Initiative ensures that donations of hair directly benefit Friends Are By Your Side, a program started by Martino Cartier to grant Wigs & Wishes to women and children undergoing cancer treatment.

The process of SHAIRING is as follows:
1. Clean, shampoo and/or condition hair without any styling products.
2. After establishing your client’s parting preference, create 4 vertical sections (2 on each
side of the head, from the ears forward, and 2 sections in the back)
3. Create 4 tight braids with elastic bands. This enhanced sectioning will allow you to
preserve more of the client’s natural length after donation. It will also maximize the
amount of hair being donated.
4. Place an additional elastic band about 1” from the ends of the hair.
5. Ensure that the braids are just below where you would like the hair cut.
6. Measure the length of the braids from band to band (minimum length is 12”)
7. Cut the hair above the elastic band at the nape so that the band remains in tact after
cutting to keep the hair together.
8. Place the braid (tied at both ends) inside a resealable bag, and seal tightly.
9. Place the bag inside a padded envelope and send to:
Martino Cartier Salon
304 Hurffville Crosskeys Road
Sewell, NJ 08080
10. If you would like to know when your donation is received, please include your full name
and email address in your SHAIRING donation.
11. Sign up for Friends Are By Your Side to see how your salon can get involved.

Acceptable Donations:
Friends Are By Your Side gladly accepts all kinds of hair from donors, so long as the below
guidelines are adhered to.

• Hair must be 12” long (longer hair is preferred)
• Hair must be freshly washed, dry and free of styling product
• Hair must be in a braid
• Hair must be tied on each end when donated
• Hair must be organized in a ponytail when cut
• Hair cannot be bunched after it’s been on the floor
• Layered hair is acceptable, considering the shortest layer is at least 12”
• Hair that has been lightened (bleached) is not acceptable
• Hair that has been colored, permed or chemically processed is also not acceptable
• Curly hair is acceptable, considering the hair is 12” when straightened.

Hotheads Stylist Interview with AJ Schulz

AJ is currently a stylist and educator at Thomas West Salon in downtown Chicago and owner of Your Stylist AJ- an on-site bridal hair service. After completing the cosmetology program with Douglas J Aveda Institute, she was recruited by Van Michael Salon in Atlanta, GA, Aveda’s busiest salon in the world. Now, in Chicago, she is a full service hairdresser, with a specified passion in styling and special occasion hair.

HH: When did you discover that you wanted a career in the beauty industry?
AJ: Freshman year of high school! With zero doubt.

HH: What your favorite Hotheads Hair Extension color?
AJ: #613 alllll day!

HH: Is there anyone that you would like to work with whom you haven't yet?
AJ: I’m pretty sure T Swift and I would be BFFs. I would love to tour with her and just keep
her hair perf.

HH: Do you think this is a skill that successful beauty professionals are born with or is it one
that can to be cultivated and perfected?
AJ: A strong combo. You can be great at anything you decide to be great at, but you can
spot the ones who are born with it from across the room.

HH: How can young men and women who are aspiring to work in the beauty industry begin their journey?
AJ: Do you. People will try to talk you out of this industry because college is the way of
today. I would have gone to college had cosmetology been an option there, but it
wasn’t, and it won’t be. If you’re passionate about making people feel amazing through
beauty, please do the world a favor and follow that passion until you’re behind the chair.

HH: What are some career goals that people should set for themselves before attempting a career in beauty?
AJ: Identify exactly what you want to do before you set out to do it. This industry is broad. If
you want to own a salon, business school or seminars a so important. If you’d like to
freelance, investigate what licensing is necessary. A big career goal that’s often
overlooked in this industry, is to stay organized. So much of this industry is up to you.
Do your taxes. I repeat, do you taxes.

HH: What is the hardest part about working in beauty?
AJ: Standing on your feet!

HH: Is beauty school a necessary step to take toward a career?
AJ: Not always. Plenty of beauty bloggers and influencers are successful and didn’t go to
beauty school. That said, it’s only a year, and you’ll be much more confident if you have
that under your belt.

HH: Who has inspired you the most throughout your career in beauty?
AJ: My boss, Tom has by far been the biggest influence in me professionally. He allowed me to grow my business rapidly, while providing me with endless support and freedom. I will
forever to be grateful for the opportunity to work in his salon, and Thomas West Salon is
the last salon I will ever work in.

HH: How can girls highlight their best features without going overboard?
AJ: Overdose on whatever makes you confident. Confidence is the best feature.

HH: Why do you think you decided to become a hair stylist?
AJ: I love that I have the potential to make someones day every day. I love that I live an
anti-cubicle lifestyle. I love being creative. I love chatting with amazing women all day.
Why isn’t everyone a hair stylist? It’s the best job ever. It’s not even work!

HH: What inspires you? Who inspires you?
AJ: I’m inspired by women sticking together. Girls get jealous of each other. Women
empower each other. My mom is the ultimate girl power role model. Women just need to be nice to each other, and she is a great example of that. It’s really not hard ladies, just be nice!

HH: What are your favorite Hotheads hair products?
AJ: I mean. There’s nothing like that hair. I wish my natural hair was as amazing. The deep
treatment keeps it feeling luscious.

HH: Which styling tools do you use most often?
AJ: I love a 1” flat iron because I can straighten, curl, and beach wave with it! It’s all I pack
when I travel, because what more do you need?

HH: What are some good tips for young people trying to break into the industry?
AJ: Please remember, the duplicate is never as good as the original. Break into the industry
by being YOU, and bringing newness. Doing what someone else is because it seems to
be working for them, won’t work as well for you. People will love you being you!

HH: How do you feel hair relates to personal style?
AJ: You wear your hair every day! If you wear it the same every day, that says one thing, but if it’s different every time your clients see you, that says something stronger.

HH:Did someone inspire the new look you have given her?
AJ: A huge part of my clientele are brides to be. There’s such an energy about brides!
They’re on the fitness game, have adapted a perfect skin routine, are putting healthy
foods into their bodies… So I love giving them fresh, full, long hair, because what in the
world could make you feel more beautiful?

HH: How do you think that hair relates to a person's confidence?
AJ: As women, we associate having hair with feeling sexy. Feeling sexy, LOOKS sexy.
